Listening For What Lingers – Join Radio Lear’s Sound Scavenge & Weird Walk

Every place carries stories. Some are written down and remembered. Others are held in passing conversations, half-forgotten memories, old names, local legends, and the sounds that surround us each day. Most of the time we pass through these places without noticing them. What happens when we slow down and listen more carefully?

On Saturday 20th June, Radio Lear is inviting people to join a Sound Scavenge & Weird Walk in Evington. Beginning at Evington Library at 10am, this informal sound walk will explore the overlooked corners of a familiar landscape, gathering sounds, observations, stories, and reflections along the way.

The walk is part of Radio Lear’s ongoing exploration of sound, story, myth, and place. Rather than focusing on landmarks alone, we are interested in how places are experienced through listening. The creak of a gate, the sound of footsteps across a churchyard, birdsong in the trees, distant traffic, fragments of conversation, and the ringing of a bell can all tell us something about where we are and how a place is remembered.

Our route will include the area around St Denys Church, a location rich in local history and layered with stories accumulated across generations. We will be asking simple questions. What sounds define a place? Which stories continue to circulate long after the people who first told them have gone? How do myths, memories, and everyday experiences become attached to particular streets, buildings, and landscapes?

This is not a guided history tour and it is not a technical recording workshop. It is an opportunity to pay attention. Participants are encouraged to listen closely, share observations, and contribute their own stories and experiences. Whether you are interested in local history, sound recording, storytelling, creative practice, or simply enjoy walking and exploring, you are welcome to take part.

No specialist equipment is required. If you have a portable audio recorder or a smartphone, you are welcome to bring it, but curiosity and a willingness to listen are the only essentials. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

The sounds, stories, and reflections gathered during the walk may contribute to future Radio Lear podcasts and creative projects exploring the relationship between people, place, memory, and imagination.
