Distraction Therapy 043 – Processed Radio

Just as processed food is altered from its natural state through the addition of preservatives, artificial ingredients, and excessive refinement, processed media—particularly processed radio—undergoes a similar transformation. It becomes heavily formatted and homogenised, conforming to rigid templates, genres, and styles of presentation.
This results in a sonic audioscape that, like processed food, is stripped of its original richness and diversity. The sounds are compressed and uniform, reducing the auditory experience to a featureless and unremarkable environment, where the unique flavours and textures of authentic, unprocessed content are lost in favour of mass appeal and convenience.
The Distraction Therapy podcast is a deliberate effort to resist the standardisation and homogenisation that dominate much of today’s media landscape. In an era where content is often reduced to standardised packaging and generic approaches—making it indistinguishable, unoriginal, and devoid of a specific audience.
Distraction Therapy seeks to cultivate an environment where interesting and creative experiences can emerge organically. This podcast rejects the notion of rigid planning or predefined objectives, allowing for a fluid and spontaneous exploration of ideas. By doing so, it champions the uniqueness and authenticity that much modern media has lost, aiming to create content that is truly reflective of its creators and meaningful to its listeners.
